An Indian History of the American West by Dee Aleaxander Brown
First published in 1970, this extraordinary book changed the way Americans think about the original inhabitants of their country. Beginning with the Long Walk of the Navajos in 1860 and ending 30 years later with the massacre of Sioux men, women, and children at Wounded Knee in South Dakota, it tells how the American Indians lost their land and lives to a dynamically expanding white society. During these three decades, America's population doubled from 31 million to 62 million. Again and again, promises made to the Indians fell victim to the ruthlessness and greed of settlers pushing westward to make new lives. The Indians were herded off their ancestral lands into ever-shrinking reservations, and were starved and killed if they resisted. It is a truism that "history is written by the victors"; for the first time, this book described the opening of the West from the Indians' viewpoint. Accustomed to stereotypes of Indians as red savages, white Americans were shocked to read the reasoned eloquence of Indian leaders and learn of the bravery with which they and their peoples endured suffering.

In this one-of-a-kind atlas, scores of archival maps and dozens of newly created maps trace the battles, political turmoil, and great themes of America’s most violent and pivotal clash of arms. Eighty-five rare period maps, many seen here for the first time, offer the cartographic history of a land at war with itself: from 19th-century campaign maps surveying whole regions and strategies to vintage battlefield charts used by Union and Confederate generals alike, along with commercial maps produced for a news-hungry public, and comprehensive Theater of War maps. In 35 innovative views created especially for this book, the key moments of major battles are pinpointed by National Geographic’s award-winning cartographers using satellite data to render the terrain with astonishing detail.
In addition, more than 320 documentary photographs, battlefield sketches, paintings, and artifacts bear eyewitness testimony to the war, history’s first to be widely captured on film.

Stonewall Jackson depended on him; General Lee complimented him, Union soldiers admired him, and ladies in Maryland, Virginia, and even Pennsylvania adored him-this dashing, handsome, lovable, young Henry Kyd Douglas. He rode with Stonewall; he fought by the model of the incomparable Ashby; he lived, joked, and courted with gay Jeb Stuart. From his meeting with John Brown, alias Isaac Smith, shortly before the Brown Raid, through the long bitter years of the War Between the States, he clung to the Southern cause, fought its battles, and endured its defeats. During and shortly after the War he set down his experiences with great men and great days. In a resonant prose almost unique among soldiers, and rare among all men, he wrote as simply and intimately of history as though it were a jovial anecdote, spun out after dinner for the entertainment of friends.

President Lincoln’s trusted friend, former law partner and heavily armed bodyguard, Ward Hill Lamon, is the subject of this new historical novel. Lamon snuck Lincoln into Washington prior to the Inauguration when detective Allan Pinkerton uncovered a plot to assassinate Lincoln when his train passed through Baltimore.
Lamon was in charge of the dedication of the national cemetery at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863. Many nights he slept on the floor outside the Lincoln bedroom in the White House to protect the president.
But he was not at Ford’s Theater on April 14, 1865 when the president was shot.

British military historian Holmes (military & security studies, Cranfield Univ.; The First World War in Photographs) chronologically relates the entire story of World War II as captured by the camera, beginning with prewar Nazi Germany (e.g., photos of the 1935 Nuremberg rallies) and ending with the surrender of Japan. Holmes provides an introductory narrative for each chapter, recounting events worldwide and then proceeding with the relevant photographs, which are themselves nicely captioned. Some of the photos (50 of the 500 are in color) have been reproduced before, but most are previously unseen and from the extensive collections of the U.K.'s Imperial War Museum. While most are by military photographers, noted photographers Cecil Beaton and Bill Brandt are also featured. There are a great many eloquent images, with the emphasis largely on the military history of the war rather than on the struggles of civilians. Recommended for all collections.
